Brief Summary- After the political victory Jurgis continues to work as a hog trimmer. The Unions and Packers start a strike, while Jurgis is able to get another job earning three dollars a day. Jurgis then becomes boss on the killing beds and is offered a better wage and a promise of a job after the strike. Jurgis comes fac to face with Phil Connor and beats him mercilessly and ends up in jail again. Harper is able to lower his bail and once Jurgis gets out he goes to the other side of Chicago.
